I hope everyone had a restful, relaxing summer. It’s hard to believe but it’s already over and we are back to school this upcoming week. Also, welcome to our Mount Slesse families who are joining us in the music program. Please take some time to browse the site and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Take a moment to check out the calendar and add make note (no pun intended) of our concert dates. As always students can expect to perform at least once a term and all performances are mandatory. Extra performance dates may be added throughout the year but students and parent will be consulted before those dates are added. For students in Pep Band, your dates will be added shortly and rest assured you will be performing multiple times per term!
We have a few upcoming trips already in the works for the 2019-20 school year. Our Jazz students will once again be offered the opportunity to attend the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho Feb 27 – Mar 1. We are also hoping to compete at MusicFest Canada (the Nationals) in May. Other trips are in the works and will be revealed shortly. With all these trips there are substantial costs and we will be hoping to fundraise to help offset those costs. If you have an idea for a fundraiser and would like to spearhead it please send me an email (email@example.com) and I will help make it happen.
For all students, you will be playing in your classes this week so make sure you have your instrument and bring your music you’ve been working on over the summer. VOX will start up on Thursday, Sept. 5th, Jr Jazz Band on Monday Sept. 9th, and Pep Band on Tuesday, Sept 10th.
We are still have space in a couple ensembles. Pep Band has openings for any students in grade 9-12 who want to play a variety of popular/rock music and can commit to numerous performances per term. No audition required, just come see Mr. Monkman. Both Jr and Sr Jazz Band are looking for more trumpet players to fill out their respective sections, again see Mr. Monkman for more info.
Lastly we are excited to welcome 2 new members to the GWG Music Dept. Mr. Shinness has taken over for Ms. Taylor (who moved to Vedder Middle School) and brings a wealth of knowledge. He will be working this year with our orchestra and helping out throughout the department. Teaching Guitar this year is Mr. Cargill, he will be taking over for Mr. Geurtsen (who was one of the 2 original music teachers here at GWG).
Please check back to our website often as it will be updated atleast once a month and ensure you are recieving emails from the Graham Music gmail account. You can also follow us on Twitter @GWGMusicDept and Instgram @gwgmusic.
Looking forward to an exciting and wonderful year of music making!
