As the school year winds down it’s time to start thinking about summer music programs to help keep your chop in shape or take your playing to the next level. Whether your long term goal is to go on in music, you want to improve as a musician or you just want to play music over the summer these summer camps will be an amazing experience. Below are a list of camps I am currently aware of in B.C. (if anyone knows of others please let me know). At all these camps students recieve instruction from professionals and university students, perform as an ensemble and present at least one concert.
UBC Summer Music Institute (www.summer.music.ubc.ca)
The Summer Music Institute is open to music students age 9 – 80+ and has a concert band program, jazz band program and strings.
KPU Summer Jazz Festival (www.kpu.ca/2018jazzfestival)
The Summer Jazz Festival at Kwantlen Polytechnic University is designed for vocalists and instrumentalists 15 and older and is located in Langley.
Douglas College Summer Jazz Intensive (www.douglas.ca/cms)
The Summer Jazz Intensive focused on improvisation, ensemble playing, jazz theory culminating with students performances in local jazz clubs. At least 3 years of playing experience is recommended.
Courtney Youth Music Camp (www.cymc.ca)
CYMC has been running for over 50 years and has offerings for Jazz Band, Orchestral String, Musical Theatre, Piano and Choir. I had to opportunity to attend CYMC in High School and it truly was a life changing experience. The quality of instruction and passion was unlike anything I had ever experienced.
For students wanting music to work on over the summer the summer music packages will be available for pick up on Thursday, June 28th (if you need yours sooner please let Monkman know). All students in Sr. Concert Band and Sr. Jazz Band are required to pick up their music before going on summer holidays.
